This morning I found a link on the WTF Would Jesus Do blog with a video about the King James Version of the Bible. Apparently Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Mesa, AZ made a video and posted it to his account on youtube with an NIV Bible being burned on a grill. (Brilliant!) I just turned on CNN and found out that he also posted a youtube video of a sermon where he is praying for Obama’s death and eternal damnation.
I’m so glad this guy decided to call his church Baptist! The good news, according to the church’s website is:
“Pastor Anderson holds no college degree but has well over 100 chapters of the Bible committed to memory, including almost half of the New Testament.”
I’ve decided to do a much better job of updating the blog. We will see how long this drive actually lasts.
This week I started classes at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity in Winston-Salem, NC. After going through orientation I’m under the impression that I won’t have much free time for the next three years. I’m also guessing that religion, politics, and the Baptist church will be my focus during this time. This blog does have the word music in the title, but I’ll be shying away from that a little during this time. Since most of my friends are not Divinity or Seminary grads I’m going to give some class updates every Tuesday and Thursday about what I’m learning. During tough weeks this may not happen, but I hope to stay as true to that as possible. So here goes:
Class 1 Old Testament- On Thursday we discussed the first 4 verses of Genesis for an hour and a half. This sounds like it might be a little boring, but it was actually one of the best class experiences I’ve ever had. What stuck out to me the most about this class were the discrepancies of the translation I have always heard of the first verse. I grew up always hearing, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.”(NIV) It turns out that a better translation would probably be, “In a beginning,” or,”In the beginning of.” That makes a huge difference!
Class 2 Church History - Who is Jesus? How seriously will we take him? More updates are on the way about this class.
Class 3 Baptist History - Good lord, Baptists have a screwed history. The exciting thing for me about this class is the professor. Dr. Bill Leonard is the Dean of the Divinity School and is probably the most prominent Baptist historian in the United States. So far I’ve been really amazed at the role South Carolina plays in Baptist history. Being a South Carolinian and member of Providence Baptist Church, which just happened to break away from one of the oldest Baptist churches in America, First Baptist Charleston, I personally relate to a lot of this history. So, what does it mean to be Baptist?
Hey folks!
I just wanted to let everybody in the Carolinas and Georgia know that we will be coming close by this summer. I’ll be playing with my friend Chris Ayer and he is awesome.
